Physical activity can have a wide range of benefits, but participation in physical activity in school is lower for autistic students compared to non-autistic students. The project is looking to involve PE teachers and reflecting on their experiences of teaching autistic students in school. The research is being done by the Centre for Neurodiversity and Development at Durham University; they are particularly interested in physical activity preferences, and barriers to physical activity linked to sensory and anxiety issues for autistic young people.

The researchers hope that this study will provide recommendations to improve physical activity provision in school and increase participation for autistic students. They are looking for insight from teachers of PE in UK mainstream and specialist schools.

Year-long creative project set to begin on the Bristol and Bath Railway Pathhttps://www.wecanmoveinsight.net/articles/year-long-creative-project-set-to-begin-on-the-bristol-and-bath-r2022-04-06T07:49:49.000Z2022-04-06T07:49:49.000ZLouise Silverhttps://www.wecanmoveinsight.net/members/LouiseSilver

Source: Sustrans 29.03.22

Mangotsfield Station in South Gloucestershire will soon play host to a 12-month creative project, encouraging more people to walk, wheel or cycle on the popular stretch of National Cycle Network Route 4.

The project will create an adaptable space suitable for artist takeovers, classes, lectures, performances, cinema screenings and workshops, enabling artistic and intellectual exchange.
A new project to encourage more people to reap the health benefits of ‘wild swimming’ has been launched by a group of researchers at the University of Nottingham.

Wild swimming has had a surge in popularity in the UK over the past few years, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the benefits to physical and mental health are now well-documented. Numerous studies have shown this type of swimming in cold water in a natural environment can boost not only fitness, but greatly improve mood, reduce tension, negativity, and depression.

However, information about, and access to, natural ‘blue spaces’ such as rivers, lakes, or the sea, tend to be local and disparate and not on the radar of wider communities, in both cities and rural areas.

The research team at Nottingham consists of linguistics and placed-based literature experts, with health policy and freshwater ecosystem specialists. They will work with a long list of partners including Cardiff University, Swim England and the Black Swimming Association, to pull together a comprehensive overview and toolkit on the mental and physical health benefits of wild swimming as well as guidance on the risks related to water quality and safety of specific swimming spots in the UK.

Investment into employability opportunities for young peoplehttps://www.wecanmoveinsight.net/articles/investment-into-employability-opportunities-for-young-people2022-03-22T15:45:19.000Z2022-03-22T15:45:19.000ZLouise Silverhttps://www.wecanmoveinsight.net/members/LouiseSilver

Source: Sport England 17.03.22

Young people in the West Midlands will get access to new volunteering and employability boosting opportunities thanks to funding of £250,000 by Sport England and £750,000 from the National Lottery’s Community Fund (NLCF) into Gen22.

A legacy project run by the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, Gen 22 aims to create 1,000 new opportunities for local young people to gain life skills from Games-related activities and enable those facing barriers such as parental responsibilities, or a criminal record, to contribute 30,000 hours of social action towards the Games.

Sport England's investment in Gen22 will see them working with six West Midlands Active Partnerships to focus in on sport and physical activity related youth social action volunteering. NLCF funding will support four ‘flagship providers’ - The Canal and River Trust, StreetGames, Groundwork and Positive Youth Foundation - to enable young people in designing and delivering youth social action projects in one of Gen22’s four focus sectors of mental health and wellbeing, physical activity, sustainability and creativity.

The Movement Project launchedhttps://www.wecanmoveinsight.net/articles/the-movement-project-launched2022-03-15T16:07:56.000Z2022-03-15T16:07:56.000ZLouise Silverhttps://www.wecanmoveinsight.net/members/LouiseSilver

Source: Association for Physical Education 10.03.22
