The Black Swimming Association - Increasing diversity in aquatic sports

Source- Sport Wales  05/10/2022

The Black Swimming Association (BSA) are still in the “listening phase” of their development in Wales, but aim to be an active force in Welsh sport in the very near future.

Launched only two-and-a-half years ago – and at the time of the first Covid lockdowns – the BSA are committed to increasing diversity in aquatic participation as well as raising awareness of swimming as a life-saving skill.

Their impact in that short time has already been recognised, with the BSA being shortlisted as one of 17 UK-wide projects in the running to be named ‘The National Lottery Project of the Year’ for 2022.

The BSA have partnered with Sport Wales, as well as Swim Wales, to help achieve their aim of making swimming more ethnically diverse. Their recently appointed delivery programme manager, Steph Makuvise, is keen to get the organisation fully up and running – or up and swimming – in Wales, but it will not be at the expense of ignoring vital research currently being undertaken.
