The Unspoken Lifeline for Social Movements.pdf
Dear Movement Watchers,
In this edition, we're focusing on an under appreciated, but vital component of successful movements: networks. Specifically peer networks, networks of practice and communities of practice.
Networks are crucial support mechanisms within social movements. They can be strong vehicles for progressive social change in their own right. Well-oiled networks galvanise members, increase their effectiveness, and give them opportunities to make even more positive change to the world around them.
A prominent example of this comes from Extinction Rebellion. There are XR lawyers, XR journalists, and hosts of other practitioner networks sharing expertise and helping XR advance their cause. As campaign boffins, we rely on networks like the E-Campaigners' Forum, an essential resource we've tapped into time and again.
Establishing and scaling networks which enjoy strong engagement levels is not easy. Here are some common issues community managers say they're grappling with:

This newsletter is all about tackling those issues. Read on for a deep dive into network building and network management best practice. We've got top tips from community and network managers, an introduction to our new Network Building Canvas and the usual Network News slot. How meta!
Have a great week,
Esther and The Social Change Agency team

Introducing our Network Building Canvas
Our Network Building Canvas is a practical guide for setting up a successful peer network or getting an existing one to flourish.
It has been tested with network and community managers and membership-based organisations and start-ups, and can be used at any time to explore network building ideas.
The canvas comes with prompt cards which can be used with both individuals and large groups. Here's what a recent attendee to our network building workshop had to say about their experience with it:
