The mechanisms underlying the antidepressant effects of exercise remain in debate; however, the efficacy of exercise in decreasing symptoms of depression has been well established. Data regarding the positive mood effects of exercise involvement, independent of fitness gains, suggest that the focus should be on frequency of exercise rather than duration or intensity until the behavior has been well established.

Six neighbourhoods in Hastings with high levels of deprivation were selected for doorstep resident interviews. High levels of inactivity are closely associated with deprivation. Specifically income, education and local area deprivation. Even low-cost activities such as walking are affected by deprivation . These interviews sought to understand residents’ activity rates, the barriers they faced to becoming active, and the support they would like from clubs, coaches, volunteers and staff.
