The mechanisms underlying the antidepressant effects of exercise remain in debate; however, the efficacy of exercise in decreasing symptoms of depression has been well established. Data regarding the positive mood effects of exercise involvement, independent of fitness gains, suggest that the focus should be on frequency of exercise rather than duration or intensity until the behavior has been well established. Comparing data for March 29, 2020, with baseline data from Jan 3 to Feb 6, 2020, we saw a 63% overall reduction in movement, with retail and recreational areas (decreased by 85%; not surprising given restrictions imposed on this sector) and transit stations (decreased by 75%) showing the largest reductions.
